Tom Cruise launches Instagram account with new 'Mission' poster reveal

Tom Cruise has thrown himself into the promotion cycle for “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” with typical Cruise-ian vigor.

On Thursday he revealed the film’s official poster on Instagram, alongside a teaser for a longer television spot that premieres Feb. 4 during Super Bowl LII.

While the poster feels relatively subdued for a Cruise action film, it actually falls in line with imagery for several of his recent films, including “American Made,” “The Mummy” and “Jack Reacher.”

The “Fallout” poster features a distant shot of Cruise’s Ethan Hunt hanging from a helicopter. A photo released on Cruise’s Instagram indicated that the helicopter had no pilot, hinting at stunts that seem considerably more dangerous than the rooftop leap that ended with Cruise breaking his foot during filming.

The poster release is just the latest social strike by Cruise to build buzz for his sixth outing as superspy Hunt. Cruise launched his personal Instagram account Jan. 25 with a picture of a slate announcing the film’s official title. He subsequently unveiled images there and on Twitter of costars Angela Bassett, Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames.

Cruise also shared clips on social media from a recent appearance with other “Fallout” cast members on the BBC’s “Graham Norton Show.” In that segment, Cruise revealed multi-angle footage of the injury he sustained during a stunt. He also talked publicly for the first time about his recovery process and the completion of filming.

“Fallout” marks Cruise’s third pairing with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie. Previously, McQuarrie wrote and directed “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” the fifth installment in the franchise, and he directed Cruise in the original “Jack Reacher.”

Details about “Fallout” remain sparse, but it figures to be as action-packed as its predecessors. Chances are Cruise and McQuarrie will be looking for a stunt that measures up to other franchise highlights, such as Cruise scaling Dubai’s Burj Khalifa (“Ghost Protocol”) and strapping himself to the outside of an in-flight Atlas C1 cargo plane (“Rogue Nation”).

“Fallout” opens July 27.
