Benicio Del Toro explores Alejandro’s past, and future, in ‘Sicario 2’

“Sicario: Day of the Soldado” picks up where its predecessor left off, shifting the focus from a character witnessing the moral ambiguities of the drug war from the outside, to the players on the inside navigating their way through its pitch-black heart. In the first film, Alejandro, played by Benicio Del Toro, embodied the bleak and unforgiving attitude of the men and women determined to stop criminals at any cost. But “Soldado” places the character at a crossroads after a fake kidnapping forces him to serve as protector for a teenage girl that both sides of the conflict would like to see disappear.

At a recent press day in Los Angeles, Del Toro spoke with Moviebill about the spiritual quandary that Alejandro faces in the film:
