Production begins on Walt Disney Pictures’ Maleficent II
Production is officially underway today on Walt Disney Pictures’ “Maleficent II,” the sequel to the 2014 hit that grossed more than $750 million at the global box office. Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are set to reprise their roles from the first film as the dark fairy Maleficent and Princess Aurora, respectively. They are joined by Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrate, alongside a supporting cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, Robert Lindsay and Harris Dickinson.
A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after the first film, “Maleficent II” continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon-to-be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.
Additional cast members returning from the 2014 film include: Sam Riley as Diaval, Imelda Staunton as the pixie Knotgrass, Juno Temple as the pixie Thistlewit, and Lesley Manville as the pixie Flittle.
“Maleficent II” is directed by Joachim Rønning (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Kon-Tiki”) and written by Linda Woolverton (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (“Transparent”). Producers include Joe Roth (“Alice through the Looking Glass,” “Oz the Great and Powerful,” “Maleficent”) and Angelina Jolie.
“Maleficent II,” which does not yet have an official release date, is filming at Pinewood Studios and at locations throughout the UK.
