September 18, 2018: Here's what's hitting DVD, Blu-ray and 4K
One of the biggest movies of the year (and the subject of our second Moviebill), Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom comes home to Blu-ray, DVD and 4K this week. Meanwhile, Keanu Reeves’ recent big screen thriller Siberia also arrives in HD.
The Criterion Collection turns its attention back to Gregory La Cava’s 1936 screwball comedy, bringing to HD for the first time My Man Godfrey. Starring William Powell and Carole Lombard, “My Man Godfrey” follows Lombard as a wealthy socialite who hires a homeless man (Powell) to be his butler. Little does she suspect that she will soon fall for him.
Platoon, which took home four Academy Awards following its release in 1986, receives a new special edition Blu-ray this week from Shout! Factory. Housed in a stylish Steelbook case, the new edition boasts a brand new 4K restoration alongside a host of supplemental material, including two different feature length audio commentaries.
Shout! Factory’s Scream Factory label has a pair of horror titles arriving this week. The Evil (1978) stars Richard Crenna as a wealth doctor who purchases a mansion only to discover that it’s haunted. Scream For Help, released in 1984, hails from director Michael Winner (“Death Wish,” “The Sentinel”) and screenwriter Tom Holland (“Fright Night,” “Child’s Play”) and follows a teenage girl (Rachael Kelly) who is certain that her stepfather is trying to kill her, even if no one else believes her.
Kino has an interesting pair of titles arriving September 18th. The 1994 cult comedy Cabin Boy sails to Blu-ray alongside a third collection of Pink Panther Cartoons Shorts from the late 1960s.
With Halloween on the way, Arrow Video is offering a new look at the 1977 giallo The Pyjama Girl Case, directed by Flavio Mogherini. The Italian slasher is based on a real life unsolved murder that was infamously committed in Australia in 1934.
Warner Archive brings to HD this week 1981’s sci-fi tinged thriller Looker. Written and directed by Michael Crichton, the film stars Albert Finney, Susan Dey and James Coburn in a story that examines mankind’s obsession with physical beauty and the lengths to which people go to improve their looks.
HBO’s recent feature adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s dystopian sci-fi classic Fahrenheit 451 arrives on Blu-ray this week. Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon headline with “99 Homes” helmer Ramin Bahrani directing.
Not only does this week see a Blu-ray collection for the third season of The CW’s DC Comics series, Supergirl, but there’s also the complete 11th (and seemingly, for the time being, final) season of FOX’s The X-Files.
Finally, small screen titles hitting DVD only this week include two CBS titles. Look for the second season of the new Macgyver series as well as the fourth season of the Tea Leoni led Madam Secretary.
