September 4, 2018: Here's what's hitting DVD, Blu-ray and 4K
A trio of recent big screen releases kick off the week. Shailene Woodley stars opposite Sam Claflin in Adrift, a romantic survival thriller that sees the pair stranded on the high seas after a hurricane. Next up, the critically acclaimed Hereditary (also available in 4K) comes home in time for Halloween while the equally lauded Mister Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor brings the late entertainer back into our living rooms.
With a third film in development, Michael Bay’s original Bad Boys and Bad Boys 2 come to 4K in a double feature set loaded with all the special features from the previous Blu-ray releases.
Disney celebrates the 25th anniversaries this week of two modern Halloween classics. Hocus Pocus gets a new anniversary edition Blu-ray release while Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas comes home in a new Sing-Along edition.
Flicker Alley has a trio of new releases this week, upgrading to Blu-ray several Rudolph Valentino films. Volume One offers new HD transfers of “Eyes of Youth” and “Moran of the Lady Letty” while Volume Two upgrades “A Society Sensation,” “Virtuous Sinners,” “Stolen Moments,” and “The Young Rajah”. Finally, Berlin: Symphony of a Great City brings to HD director Walter Ruttmann’s famous 1927 ode to Germany’s capital city.
From the Criterion Collection this week comes a new Blu-ray upgrade of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes From a Marriage. Aired on Swedish television in 1973, the darkly comic miniseries stars Liv Ullman and Erland Josephson and, over six chapters, explores a married couple as their relationship begins to sour.
Small screen releases this week begin with Blu-ray editions for both the first season of CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” spinoff Young Sheldon and the 13th season The CW’s incredibly long running Supernatural. Arriving on DVD only, meanwhile, is the second (and final) season of the time travel adventure Timeless, the fifth season of The Goldbergs and the eighth season of Hawaii Five-O.
