Paramount Pictures has given us a first look at everyone’s favorite fast-moving blue hedgehog as he appears in next year’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie. The below motion poster debuted today at IGN and, even though Sonic himself is masked in shadow, it’s our very first look at what to expect from the November 15, 2019 release.
Featuring Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, “Sonic the Hedgehog” also stars James Marsden, Tika Sumpter and Jim Carrey.
Although an official plot description for “Sonic the Hedgehog” has not yet been revealed, Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos dropped a few hints about what to expect, speaking at the Producer Guild of America‘s Produced By conference this past June.
“[Sonic is] a juvenile delinquent on the adventures in a pretty straight rural environment with a local policeman,” said Gianopulos (via Deadline).
The film is expected to merge animation and live action with Sonic appearing as a CGI character. Marsden will play the policeman with Carrey set as Sonic’s arch nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (or Dr. Eggman in the original Japanese).
“Sonic the Hedgehog” made his video game debut in 1991 on the SEGA Genesis console. Since then, the game series has exceeded 360 million units sold between packaged and digital downloads. The new film may mark the first “Sonic” movie, but it’s not the first time the character has been seen on the big screen. Sonic made cameo appearances in both 2012’s “Wreck-It Ralph” and, earlier this year, in “Ready Player One”.
