Venom trailer transforms Tom Hardy into 'something else'
Sony Pictures has released a teaser trailer for “Venom,” director Ruben Fleischer’s adaptation of the eponymous Marvel Comics anti-hero played by Tom Hardy (“Mad Max: Fury Road”). Hardy plays Eddie Brock, an ordinary man who bonds with an alien symbiote that gives him superhuman abilities, but also transforms his personality.
Venom previously appeared in Sam Raimi’s 2007 film “Spider-Man 3,” played by Topher Grace. That version of the character was faithful to the comics source material, in that the symbiote initially bonds with the iconic superhero but turns to Brock after Peter Parker realizes that it’s adversely affecting his well-being. Fleischer, best known for “Zombieland,” excises Spider-Man, focusing only on Brock and his travails, and hinting at a take that combines funny and scary elements.
The trailer offers no hints of Venom, focusing on wall-to-wall action and the star wattage of Hardy. He stars alongside Michelle Williams (“All the Money in the World”), Riz Ahmed (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”) and Reid Scott (HBO’s “Veep”), working from a screenplay by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”), Kelly Marcel (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) and Will Beall (the upcoming “Aquaman” adaptation).
Details remain scarce on the film, but Sony Pictures released a brief synopsis of the film:
“One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.”
“Venom” opens in theaters October 5, 2018.
